Peace offering to earth

Using photography, I’ve found myself on a journey, finding parallels between nature and humanity.

The Summer of 2023 was spent exploring Ireland, the homeland of my great-grandmother. Here, under a dense tree canopy along the Camcor River, it was revealed that a centuries-old Oak with a lively offshoot mirrored my family’s history, thriving for generations in the Irish air. The cyclical pattern of growth and aging echoed the human experience.

Months later, on a 5k walk, I encountered a spiderweb pearly with morning dew—a fragile home. Capturing this moment emphasized humans’ perpetual desire for meaningful work, projects, titles, communities, or… homes. Like spiders weaving intricate structures, we seek connection and safety. This photo deepened my journey of self-exploration and joy in finding the similarities between nature and beings, and the desire to find a true sense of belonging in my life.
Through nature’s remarkable resilience and survival stories, such as the Banyan Tree of Hawaii persevering through catastrophic burns and sprouting new leaves, humans consistently defy expected limits. This journey, exploring the parallels between nature and humanity, began with the discovery of the “seeing tree” during a period of profound contemplation and physical exhaustion. Diagnosed with treatment-resistant Hashimoto’s, I battled extreme fatigue, brain fog, and escalating anxiety. While hiking one day, I encountered a tree with eyes, formed through self-pruning—a tactic for self-preservation to prioritize faster-growing areas. Amidst destruction and deforestation, this tree chose to “see,” prompting me to reassess my focus. Just as it shed unnecessary branches, I decided to release my fears, acknowledging that some aspects of my health were beyond my control, instead choosing to see my problems for what they really were.

As a runner, the rhythmic exchange of oxygen to carbon dioxide mirrors the poetic dance between breath and Earth’s plant life. The respiratory system, which practically replicates tree branches, forms a miniature forest within our bodies, intertwining bronchi and branches in an intricate ecosystem.
This journey illuminated the impact of self-exploration and the enduring power of nature, even in adversity. The profound connection between these life forms offers profound insights into personal existence. In recognizing and exploring this connection, I have uncovered valuable lessons about resilience, growth, and the intertwining threads of nature and humanity.
